How Is the Asiatic Lion Census Conducted?

Just as India conducts a national human census every five years, the Gujarat Forest Department carries out a comprehensive lion population estimation, known as the "Lion Census," to monitor the health and distribution of the Asiatic lion. This effort involves a collaborative approach, engaging forest officials, wildlife experts, photographers, and volunteers from various NGOs.

Dividing the Forest for Accurate Estimation

The lion census encompasses diverse habitats, including protected areas, national parks, and surrounding forest regions & farm & waste lands around. To ensure thorough coverage, the forest is divided into manageable units known as "beats," each assigned to specific teams. These teams are tasked with collecting data through direct sightings, camera traps, and other methods.

Utilizing Technology: Camera Traps and GPS

In recent years, technological advancements have enhanced the accuracy of the census. A no. of camera traps are strategically placed throughout the forest to capture images of wildlife, aiding in the identification and counting of lions . Additionally, GPS trackers are employed to record precise locations of sightings, ensuring data accuracy and aiding in tracking lion movements.

Direct Sighting and Documentation

Teams comprising forest staff, photographers, and volunteers are deployed to specific areas for direct observation. Each member is provided with a sketch of lion body markings to aid in identification. Observations are meticulously recorded, noting distinctive features such as scars, ear shapes, and tail tufts. Photographs are taken from various angles, and GPS coordinates are logged to document the sighting locations.

Data Integration and Analysis

The collected data, including photographs, GPS coordinates, and identification marks, are compiled and processed centrally. Advanced software and statistical methods are utilized to analyse the information, ensuring each lion is counted accurately without duplication. This comprehensive analysis culminates in the publication of the lion population estimate by the government.

The lion census not only provides vital data for conservation efforts but also fosters a collaborative spirit among various stakeholders dedicated to preserving the majestic Asiatic lion.
